Outdoor Learning

Benefits of Outdoor Learning

Modern researchers have confirmed our Ojibwe teachings that time outdoors, especially in natural spaces, is beneficial. Adults and children begin to benefit in cognitive, emotional and physical ways with a minimum of 120 minutes outside each week. The effect is cumulative, that is, the more we are outdoors in natural spaces, the better we are. Maajiigin recognizes that we have an obligation to create the best possible learning environment for our children and that means time outdoors every day that it safe. Families should plan that children will be outside everyday year-round when they attend programming at Maajiigin.

Dressing for Outdoor Learning

Please dress your child for play each day. At Maajiigin play will likely include dirt and mud. Depending on your child’s interests, they will likely get dirty. As the weather gets colder, we will still go outside. Please be sure to dress your child in layers. If for any reason you do not have adequate clothing for your child for the weather, please inform Maajiigin staff.
