The director, and all staff employed in the program, will be expected to obtain the following training within 90 days of employment and will be re-certified every 2 years to be in compliance with the licensing requirements.

Additional Training
In addition to new staff orientation and health and safety trainings, all employees with direct contact with children are required to obtain a minimum of 16 additional training hours following an annual in-service training plan.

The Child Development Associate (CDA) credential is nationally recognized and awarded by the Council for Professional Recognition which is based in Washington DC. It offers essential knowledge about working with children and helping them reach their full potential. A CDA is often a first step into a career teaching and caring for young children. CDAs are available in Preschool, Infant/Toddler, Family Child Care and Home Visitor specialty areas.
According to the National Head Start Performance Standards (Section 648A), Teachers in Center Based programs must:
- Have at least a Child Development Associate Credential, or
- Be enrolled in a Child Development Associate Credential program that will be completed within 1 year
The Leech Lake Early Childhood program supports the opportunity for staff to obtain their Child Development Associate Credential through annual cohorts that begin in October, January, and April. Each CDA candidate will receive 8 Care Course books, which are specific to their age group, and 1 CDA Competency Standards You will also be required to prepare a professional portfolio, schedule a verification visit, and take a computerized CDA exam to complete your CDA.

Online degrees are being offered through the Leech Lake Tribal College, Rasmussen College, and Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU). There are also grants and scholarships available for financial assistance through ChildCare Aware of Minnesota.

- E.A.C.H. Scholarships
- This is a scholarship program that helps early childhood and school-age care providers increase their levels of education, compensation, and commitment to the field by earning college credits and degrees.
- Staff enrolled in an early education degree program must apply
- Family child care providers, center-based staff, or school-age care staff can receive funding to take credits toward an associate or bachelor’s degree in Child Development or Early Childhood Education at an accredited Minnesota college or university. T.E.A.C.H. Scholarships cover 85% of the cost of tuition and books for up to 18 credits per year. Recipients also receive a travel stipend and release time. Upon successful completion of nine or more credits, recipients may receive a $250 bonus. Scholarship recipients commit to remaining at their place of employment for at least one year after their scholarship end date.
Career Pathways is a program operated under the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act Program (WIOA). Members of a Federally Recognized Tribe, who are participating in a higher education certificate or degree program, are eligible to receive incentives to assist them in continuing on their career path. Leech Lake Early Childhood is working in collaboration with the WIOA program to provide a combination of incentives for student employees. Following are the ECD and WIOA incentives offered.
